Statement of Teaching Matters' Executive Director Lynette Guastaferro on ESSA and Professional Development

New York, NY - December 10, 2015
We are pleased to see in the new education law an emphasis on professional development that aligns to the type of school-based learning Teaching Matters has provided for 20 years. The law's language makes clear that building educator capacity through intensive professional development is a critical part of local strategy to help students succeed. Professional development should be  "sustained, intensive, collaborative, job-embedded, data-driven, classroom focused..."  We agree. These are key elements of how Teaching Matters supports educators to lead their own learning communities, and such collaboration really moves the needle for kids.

Teaching Matters is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing teacher effectiveness, one of the most critical factors in student success. Our services transform how educators work together at urban public schools, helping the most effective teachers develop the skills they need to lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement. We also partner with school leadership to create a work environment that equips teachers to succeed in the classroom. From nearly 20 years of working in New York City’s public schools, we’ve developed an understanding of realistic and lasting ways to improve student outcomes, and we’re committed to real, measurable results.
